Theme: Worship as Union in the Perichoresis of the Trinity

Perichoresis, a Greek term, describes the eternal, intimate, and mutual indwelling relationship of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It captures the dynamic, dance-like interaction of the Trinity, where each Person fully participates in the life of the others without losing their distinct identities. In worship, we are invited to honor God and experience union with the Trinity, participating in this divine “dance.”

Lesson 1: Understanding Perichoresis and Our Union with the Trinity

Key Scripture: John 17:21-23

“That they may all be one; as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us…”

Lesson Focus:

Perichoresis Defined: Teach the concept of the perichoresis as the interrelationship and mutual indwelling within the Trinity. Highlight that worship is an invitation to join in this relationship.

Union with God: Emphasize how worship brings us into deeper communion with God, aligning us with the Divine unity.

Practical Application:

• View you worship as not just singing or praying, but a deep connection with the living God.

• During worship, invite the group to pause and reflect on the relational nature of the Trinity.

Discussion Question:

• How does knowing that we are participating in the Trinity’s relationship change the way we approach worship?

Lesson 2: Worship as Participation in the Divine Dance

Key Scripture: Colossians 1:16-17

“For by him all things were created… and in him all things hold together.”

Lesson Focus:

Dynamic Interaction: Discuss how perichoresis is a dynamic and ongoing relationship. The Trinity’s interaction is active, like a dance, and we are invited into it.

Participation in Worship: When we worship, we are not just observers but participants in the life of the Trinity.

Practical Application:

• Introduce contemplative worship practices like silent prayer, meditation, “soaking” or “resting in God” to sense the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit.

• Encourage group members to consciously invite the Holy Spirit into their worship time, visualizing themselves as joining the divine “dance.”

Discussion Question:

• In what ways can we participate more fully in this divine relationship through our daily worship?

Lesson 3: Worship as Honor and Experience of the Trinity’s Love

Key Scripture: Romans 5:5

“God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit…”

Lesson Focus:

Experiencing Divine Love: Worship is not only honoring God but experiencing His love, which flows from the unity of the Trinity.

Union in Worship: As we honor God in worship, we also experience the love and relational unity of the Trinity in real time.

Practical Application:

• Encourage the group to reflect on moments where they’ve felt a deep sense of God’s love during worship. Suggest journaling these experiences.

• Practice a “gratitude worship session” where the focus is on expressing love and gratitude for God’s indwelling presence and His invitation into divine relationship.

Discussion Question:

• How does experiencing God’s love through worship help us in our personal and communal spiritual lives?

Group Discussion Questions:

1. How does understanding worship as union with the Trinity shift your perspective on your relationship with God?

2. What practical steps can you take to deepen your participation in the “divine dance” during worship and in daily life?

3. How can experiencing the mutual love of the Trinity in worship help you better reflect that love to others in your community?
